Bear the following in mind: to get from central Serengeti ( Seronera) to Lake Natron Conservation Area in a day, is not recommendable and not feasible. Not everyone is aware though of the driving times to Lake Natron. The most logical route is to visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti first and than continue to Lake Natron. The cooler months here (June, July and August) are hot but bearable the rest of year has very high temperatures.In December and January, the lake shores swarm with flamingos, as then is the time most of their eggs hatch. The fit and brave might like to try and climb Oldoinyo Lengai, an active vulcano. After a few hours you’ll reach a beautiful natural swimming pool surrounded by steep rock walls – showered by cascades of spring-water and overlooked by palm trees. This walk winds up through a shady gorge (very welcome in the heat) between steep cliffs. You can walk up to the Engero Sero Waterfalls. Yet the clear water surface misleads birds who happily dive in the water, after which their skin burns and they tragically die. The alkalinity levels of the lake can become so concentrated, that they almost approach that of straight ammonia, and the water is often viscous to touch. Lake Natron sits at the lowest point of the rift valley – 600m above sea level – and is probably the world’s most caustic body of water. This area lies north east of the Ngorongoro Crater close to the border of Kenya. The second group of guests, the hikers, enjoyed a walk up to the archaeological site of Kamuihei. And there they spotted not one, not two, but eight imperial pigeons sitting in one single tree. They were looking for the endemic Upe, one of the biggest pigeons in the world. All-terrain vehicles waited on the pier to take the first group, the “birders,” high up in the valley. From far away, our guests could hear the traditional welcome song, “Mave mai”. Once we approached the island, the impressive landscape of Nuku Hiva overwhelmed every single person onboard: steep cliffs rose out of the ocean, and spectacular rock formations towered over the tiny village of Hatiheu.
